Why Do My Appliances Require a PAT Test?
While there is no specific legal obligation to PAT test your equipment and appliances, you must ensure the safety of your workplace under other legislation:
Your business insurance will also require you to comply with electrical safety regulations.
In short, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. One small electrical fault could lead to huge legal and financial liabilities. For the safety of your employees and your premises, it pays to make sure that all your electrical equipment is regularly and professionally PAT tested.
What Does Portable Appliance Testing Involve?
A PAT test is a thorough inspection to check the safety of your electrical equipment. Our experts will discuss your requirements and provide you with a detailed PAT testing plan and costs. We assess your needs carefully and accurately, so you never have to worry about any unnecessary testing.
Our experienced electrical engineers conduct both visual and physical checks on your appliances. They will determine the level of safety each piece of equipment provides and test accordingly.
This involves examining each item for any obvious faults such as loose or frayed wires or other damage. Our electricians then use specialist PAT testing equipment to check for any underlying hazards. This stage of the test will check earth connection, lead polarity and the insulation resistance.
Which Appliances need PAT Testing?
Any electrical appliance can present safety issues, but there are 3 broad categories:
Class One: the most hazardous appliances that require an earth, e.g. floor printers, vending machines, electric heaters, toasters, kettles etc.
Class Two: have added insulation and therefore don’t require an earth, e.g. drills, lawnmowers, TVs etc.
Class Three: low-voltage appliances (some may only need the lead testing), e.g. laptops, phone chargers, torches etc.
